However, very few companies give you a real choice when it comes to size. In most cases, you are stuck with a single length dictated by the manufacturer and simply have to take what is available.
At VisionVelo, we believe that every bike and every riding style require a different approach. That is why our lineup usually includes up to four sizes: Mini, Racing, Universal, and Long.
However, offering options also brings up questions about which model is right for you and which will work best in your specific case. A poorly chosen fender can turn out too short for harsh conditions, cause issues on bike park lifts, or simply not match the look of your machine. To help you decide and avoid a wrong purchase, we prepared this guide. Here are the three main criteria you should follow.
1. General climate conditions and terrain you ride
Since we ship our fenders worldwide, we know firsthand how drastically trail conditions can vary. The general climate of the region where you ride, along with the recurring weather at your local spots, should be the primary factor determining your choice of length.
Dry regions
If dust, sand, loose dirt, and small stones dominate your area and you rarely ride in the rain, with your main goal being the protection of fork seals and your face, the Mini or Racing versions are your best choices.
Mixed conditions
In climates where it is often dry but mud is not unfamiliar, the decision comes down to the Racing or Universal size. The Racing size handles light to moderate mud well, and its main advantage lies in ideal proportions that give the bike a sleek aesthetic. If you prefer extra protection for worse weather, go with the Universal version.
Wet and exceptionally muddy regions
When facing frequent rain, standing water, and deep mud, only the Universal and Long models come into play. The Universal version copes easily with standard mud. However, if you ride in truly severe conditions with standing water on the trails, the Long size is optimal, as it was designed specifically to shed water as efficiently as possible.
2. Where you ride: bike parks or local trails?
A less obvious but highly practical criterion is the type of spots where you spend most of your time and how you get to the top. Some fender sizes perform flawlessly on lifts, while others may introduce certain limitations.
Riding lifts with front-wheel hooks
Mini: Completely hassle-free. This is the ideal option if you spend a lot of time in bike parks and do not want to worry about hanging your bike safely.
Racing and Universal: Thanks to their flexibility, they usually fit into lift hooks without issue, though hanging the bike requires a bit of care.
Long: We do not recommend using this size on hook lifts. The rear portion of the fender is long and sits so close to the tire that inserting the hook onto the front wheel can easily catch and snap it.
Local riding and classic Enduro
If you pedal to the trails or unload your bike from a car, this point does not restrict you, so you can choose any length.
3. Aesthetics and personal preferences
There is no hiding it, the look of your bike matters! Even though our fenders share the same foundation and design language, different lengths drastically alter the bike’s silhouette.
Nobody wants to mount something on their bike that they simply do not like. If local weather conditions and your transport methods give you full flexibility, simply go with your personal taste. For some, the height of style might be the compact, aggressive Mini, while others might prefer the race-ready look of the Racing version or the full coverage of the Universal.
